New Camera - Canon PowerShot SD870

I’ve been using the Nikon D70 for 3 years and have snapped over 20,000 pictures with it (a good portion of them posted in the photo gallery). About 6 months ago I really started disliking taking pictures and realized it was because my D70 is really big and I hated lugging it around.

Well, we just purchased a Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH, and I like it almost as much as the D70.

Obviously the D70 has better glass and is all-around a better camera; however, I like the Canon almost as much for the following reasons…

Pros…
- Small, I can take it everywhere!
- Movies, it’s a whole new world being able to shoot movies. This camera also has a really cool time-lapse movie mode with an adjustable time lapse (click here for a link to a time-lapse movie I created)
- Movie quality is impressive - 640×480 @ 30fps. This is adjustable too.
- Great battery life, went 4 days and 200 pictures without charging (with lots of flash)
- Good picture quality. Not as good as a DSLR, but good. Very rich colors.
- Surprisingly good control over exposure, shutter speed and color/saturation. You’ll definitely need to spend a few days playing with the camera settings. I was able to capture some great low light shots with a few minutes of setting adjustments.
- Someday camera manufacturers will create 2 sunset modes - a mode for shooting sunsets, and a mode for shooting a sunset with a subject in the foreground. To this camera’s credit, I was able to get the settings just right for a couple of sunset shots - although it took about 3 minutes (with Daryl tapping her foot impatiently and getting snippy)
- Super-fast start. Press power and almost instantly you can snap a picture - great for capturing pictures while on the go.
- 3 inch rear display with a cool programmable slide show.

Cons…
- The auto mode could be a bit better - Daryl & I botched a couple shots because of low light exposure and flash issues. This was almost a non-issue though, really.
- The menus take a bit to figure out. Based on different modes, the menu appears differently. This issue is resolved by simply reading the manual.
- The body on this camera scratches very easily. After one trip it looks like it’s 6 months old. If you have the money, I would get the next-better model with the titanium casing (PowerShot SD950 IS), although the rear viewing display is only 2.5 inches.
- No viewfinder - only a problem when we were in heavy sunlight on the beach - not too big a deal.
- Red eye reduction is not as great as I’d hoped.

BOTTOM LINE
As an avid photographer, I absolutely love this camera and would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a very small camera that takes good pictures and great video.
