Remote Desktop Connection Bar Pushpin

I use Microsoft’s Remote Desktop functionality to remotely manage my servers. For those that have not used Remote Desktop, this software allows people to see exactly what’s happening on computers that are physically situated elsewhere, just as if they were sitting at that computer. It comes in real handy if I want to see what my server’s are doing and I don’t feel like driving to San Jose or elsewhere.

Recently, Microsoft released Remote Desktop 6. There are some nice improvements that make the upgrade worthwhile; however, there is 1 new feature that bugs the shit out of me daily and it’s the reason I’m blogging today.

Whenever I create a new Remote Desktop connection and then Save it, ALL of my Remote Desktop connections no longer stay “pinned” after logging in. Microsoft broke a really nice feature here; any time you previously connected to a Remote Desktop connection, Windows would remember if this pushpin stayed “pinned”. If the pushpin is not pinned, the Connection Bar automatically hides itself (disappears) and then it’s just 1 more inefficiency in my day. See the screen shot I provided for an example of the Pushpin and the Connection Bar (top of screen). Sure, I’m being picky here, I admit it, but when you use Remote Desktop as much as I do, it becomes a big pain in the ass.

I’m not blogging today to merely whine about this issue, no no no boys and girls. I actually have written a small Registry script that fixes this problem! Now, whenever I make a new Remote Desktop connection and Save it, I just run this little script and all of my Remote Desktop Connections will stay “pinned”.

I could not find a fix for this anywhere on the net so I hope this fix serves some purpose to all the nerds out there who are dealing with this inconvenience…
